Named in the Southern Song and perfected under the Ming, Nanjing Yunjin is the most exacting jacquard weaving tradition ever carried alive. In 2009, UNESCO inscribed its craftsmanship on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The Yunjin loom, the great wooden draw-loom known as 大花楼, is taller than a man. A weaver above pulls the threads; a draw-boy below lifts the sheds in dialogue with her hands. A pattern a machine would print in seconds here takes a hundred days, because every weft is a decision.

牡 丹The sovereign of flowers.
The peony has been the sovereign of Chinese blossoms since the Tang court. Its full-petalled bloom is read as 富贵 (fugui): wealth that is patient, rank that is soft, abundance that returns. To weave it in cloud-collar and phoenix-scroll is to put prosperity onto the wall in the old, generous way.

Of the twelve panels in this edition, six have been placed in private collections across Hangzhou, Kyoto, and Brooklyn. We release the remainder by private inquiry, each accompanied by the master weaver's seal 印 and a hand-bound certificate of provenance.
